Donor Designation and Family Consent
At the time of referral from the hospital, CORE searches the Pennsylvania and West Virginia DMV database to determine whether the patient is a registered donor. If upon evaluation the patient is determined to be medically eligible to donate, at an appropriate time the legal next-of-kin is approached with the opportunity to donate.
If the patient is a registered donor, the family is notified that CORE will proceed with organ – and, if applicable, tissue – recovery. If the individual is not registered, the family is asked to give their authorization for organ and/or tissue recovery. If the family authorizes donation, the legal next-of-kin signs a donor consent form.
