CORE - Brochure - A Gift of Life - page 9

In 2009, there
were 8,021 deceased
organ donors and 6,610
living organ donors
resulting in 28,465
organ transplants.
Nationally, more than
1 10,000 people
are awaiting an
organ transplant.
DID YOU KNOW?
A deceased donor
can give their kidneys,
pancreas, liver, lungs,
heart, intestinal organs,
tissues and corneas.
A living donor is able
to give a kidney, or a
portion of a lung or liver.
At least 18 will die
each day without
receiving an organ
transplant, including
two from CORE’s
service area.
Donation is a possibility only
after all efforts to save
the patient's life have been
exhausted, tests have been
performed to confirm the
absence of brain or brain
stem activity, and brain death
has been declared.
Someone is added
to the organ
transplant list
every
12 minutes.
250,000 people
await tissue and
cornea transplant
each day.
With at least 60,000
people waiting
nationally, kidneys
are the organ in
greatest demand,
followed by liver,
heart and lungs.
Between 10,000
and 12,000 people
die annually who are
considered medically
suitable for organ,
tissue and cornea
donation, yet only
a fraction donate.
At the five organ transplant
hospitals served by CORE,
approximately 4,000 people
await organ transplantation,
and thousands more
are In need of tissue or
cornea transplants.
