What is Grief?
Accepting that your loved one has passed on
will be the hardest thing you ever have to do.
You may not have been able to prepare for
the loss, had a chance to say goodbye, or say
everything you wanted to share.
You may feel very angry, confused, scared, or
physically sick. Some people experience panic.
All of these feelings are normal at this time.
And they are all common among people who
have lost a loved one. This common experience
is called grief.
Believe it or not, grief is healthy. It helps you
to face the reality of death, recover from your
initial pain and sadness, and find joy in living
again. How quickly that happens is a personal
matter. But it does happen. You will pull
through this very sad time.
Living with Your Loss
Only time will temper the pain of losing a
loved one, but we hope to offer consolation
and perspective to those who are faced with
the imminent or sudden death of a friend
or family member. We want to help you
understand what to expect from the grieving
process, how to manage your grief, and where
to find additional support.
We offer basic information about grief and
special insights from a select group of other
individuals who have faced similar tragedies,
grieved for their losses, and then healed.
We hope this information helps you find
some comfort in your time of sorrow.
Grief is a painful,
but natural reaction
to the loss of your
loved one. It’s different
from the pain and
sorrow you feel for
the person who died.
Grief is what happens
to you.
“After John’s death, I felt as if there was a shell around me. Although many
people didn’t notice any difference, I knew the woman people saw and
spoke with was not the real me.”
