Stacey Vernallis was packed and scheduled to board
a flight to Nepal in October 2013 to attend a Hindu
coming-of-age ceremony for her fiancé’s son.
But when a nagging cough turned out to be
cardiomyopathy, she was forced to postpone
her trip.
“I felt overwhelmed,” says Stacey. “I’ve always been
very much in love with life. And when confronted
with the reality that my life could be not only
shortened but stymied, I decided I would rather
take the risk of not living it, and try and get a heart
to be able to see and do these things with family.”
One heart transplant and two years later, Stacey was
finally able to travel to Nepal in 2015 to be present
for the same ceremony that had been put on hold.
Always an avid traveler, she’s made it a point to
visit as many places as she can fit into her busy
schedule—from the French Alps, to Zürich, to
Stockholm, to Nairobi and beyond.
Stacey says. “I’m much more aware and sensitive to
the beauty of every moment because I know how
suddenly and irreversibly it can be pulled from you.”
