QUALITY AND INNOVATION
Non-hospital Referrals
This year, CORE launched a
new electronic system with
the Allegheny County Medical
Examiner’s office, CORE’s largest
non-hospital referrer. Rather than
submit referrals by phone like in
previous years, the system now
automatically transmits referrals
through its intake data entry
software.
The change resulted in a dramatic
increase in referrals—and most
importantly, an increase in donors.
Rural Urban Leadership Program (RULE)
CORE’s Director of Communications Misty Enos
(front
row, second from right)
was accepted into the Rural Urban
Leadership (RULE) Program, sponsored by Penn State
University. The program is focused on building bridges
and creating understanding of Pennsylvania’s divergent
rural and urban issues. The two-year program builds
on existing leadership capabilities and knowledge, and
provides an understanding of the local, state, national,
and international environment. Misty was nominated by
RULE alumnus and CORE Chairwoman Cheri Rinehart.
Tissue Recovery Projects
CORE took on four new and innovative projects in 2015
to provide transplant recipients with the types of tissue
that surgeons are now requesting.
ViviGen® Cellular Bone Matrix
is an innovative cellular
allograft that incorporates live, viable bone cells, which
are critical to the healing process.
Fresh Osteochondral Allografts (FOA)
allow orthopedic
surgeons to transplant mature hyaline cartilage with
viable chondrocytes and subchondral bone into
recipients’ damaged articular surfaces.
Map3® Cellular Allogeneic Bone Graft
is a natural and
safe alternative to autograft that supports the body’s
innate healing mechanisms and provides the scaffold
and signals to support the bone healing process.
En Bloc Recovery
is a process that allows for fewer errors
on the grafts recovered and allows for additional grafts to
be utilized because a larger segment is recovered.
CORE had to examine its staffing model and obtain
products to conduct these recoveries using processes
new to the tissue industry.

Coroner Honored
CORE honored Fayette County
Coroner Dr. Philip Reilly in May 2015
with the Donate Life Ambassador
Award for his outstanding
contribution to CORE’s mission of
saving and enhancing lives.
Reilly has made a purposeful and
personal effort to remind the
surviving members of a deceased
individual’s family to consider
donation.
In his role as coroner, he has
encouraged his staff to provide
similar reminders and offer any
other assistance to help preserve
fond memories of lost loved ones—
potentially helping to improve
more than 600 lives.
