National Donate Life Month
CORE joined the organ donation community in April 2014 in
celebration of National Donate Life Month. Throughout the
month-long celebration, CORE encouraged the public across its
donation service area to register to become organ, tissue and
cornea donors, and to learn about the gift of donation by
attending awareness events. In West Virginia, CORE kicked off an
awareness and fund-raising campaign at the Wendy’s in Ripley,
WV with a flag-raising ceremony, featuring remarks by dignitaries
and donor mom, Lisa Johnson.
Each of the participating 56 area based Wendy’s® restaurants
donated 10 percent of all sales to benefit Donate Life West
Virginia donor awareness programs and donor family resources.
On April 11, CORE celebrated National Blue & Green Day, an
initiative to encourage people to talk about organ donation, why
it is important, and how easy it is to sign up.
In Pennsylvania, CORE hosted an information table on April 11
at a Fox Chapel Max & Erma’s to encourage organ donor
sign-ups. Restaurant patrons who presented a special ticket
received 20 percent off of their food purchase, which Max &
Erma’s in turn donated to CORE programs. On the same day,
CORE hosted an organ donation event and presentation called
“Everything you wanted to know, but where afraid to ask”— at
the Monroeville Public Library.
On April 12, CORE celebrated with an afternoon of fun and
education at Frank Sarris Public Library in Canonsburg. Mayor
David Rhome presented a proclamation and Bill Sarris of Sarris
Candy shared how donation and transplantation has touched his
family, along with other donor family and transplant recipients
sharing their stories.
